It's time for a good,
Bible-based example. Since the Lord used the apostle Paul to write much of the scripture that we read concerning
legal matters, it would be fair to say that the way that Paul responded to
legal issues could be a good example for us to follow. Sounds logical. In Acts chapter 22, Paul was arrested in Jerusalem for preaching, and was brought by the authorities to a military barracks, and they were about to start beating him with a leather whip (scourging) while interrogating him. Just as they were preparing him for the punishment, the apostle said to the man in authority “Is it lawful for you to scourge a man who is a Roman, and uncondemned?” A few verses later we read “Then those who were about to examine him withdrew from him; and the commander was also afraid after he found out that (Paul) was a Roman, and because he had bound him.” (Acts 22:25,29) Some key concepts are illustrated for us in the short passage. First is the concept of government in action. The authorities arrested Paul for a supposed, yet unknown crime. Next, we have the concept of questioning the LEGALITY of the governments action. (”Is it lawful...???") Then, we have the government's response to the clear authority of law (”they...withdrew from him...and the commander was also afraid...”). If Paul had not challenged the authority, basing his challenge upon a legal foundation, his legal rights would have been further violated. |
