God has ordained government for the security and stability of civilized society. We live in a type of democratic society. But here is a question you may not have thought much about. Do we really put government officials in power? Well, yes and NO. The Bible teaches that God has established government, and He is in control of those who are in “power”. Why did God create human government? Government was created to keep order and administer justice in a world that has been affected by sin. Ever since Adam and Eve disobeyed God in that perfect world long ago, we can say with Dorothy, “We're not in Kansas anymore.”

The apostle Paul says of government, “Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and the authorities that exist are appointed by God.” (Romans 13:1) This is not implying that each and every ruler, like Hitler or Hussein, was endorsed by God, it is teaching that God has established governing authorities as a whole. Imagine this world without law and order, with no authority to restrain the evil in men's hearts! Contrary to many in the popular counterculture, ANARCHY would not be living in freedom, it would be living in FEAR.

Governments are not supposed to be without limits...they are under authority as well, and we call that limiting principle, LAW. Since God ordained government, and God's nature is justice and fairness, then government should operate within a system of law and justice. The old testament is full of accounts of God replacing governments and rulers who violated His laws. Government is NOT ABOVE the law, rather it was intended to administer the law.
